Shining the Light in Darkness!

On our last trip to Kenya Becky and I were blessed to walk the Slums of Nairobi some of the darkest places in Kenya. A place where drugs, violence and prostitution rules the streets, but not for long. This was such a life changing time. We were invited in home after home to pray over the homes and the people. There was such a joy and hope in the people that we prayed with. We know that the light of Christ shines through us, and everywhere we go, we shine that light.

Dr. Livingstone I presume.

Growing up on a diet of bugs bunny I had heard the name but never knew that Dr. Livingstone was a real person. To my surprise while walking through Westminster Abby in London I saw his headstone. Here is a man who's mission in life was to share the Gospel of Jesus with people who had never heard in the deep of Africa. He was immortalized in pop culture and is laid to rest next to Isaac Newton, and the Kings and Queens of England. Makes me think when you follow Jesus and serve Him there is nothing that is impossible.

Top 5 Things That Hinder Personal Development
Understanding the obstacles that stand in the way of your growth

Top 5 Things That Hinder Personal Development

Understanding the obstacles that stand in the way of your growth

Personal development is a lifelong journey that involves continuous growth, learning, and self-improvement. Yet for many people, this journey is interrupted — not by external forces, but by internal habits and mindsets that quietly hold them back. By shining a light on these barriers, we give ourselves the power to overcome them. Here are the top five things that hinder personal development, and what you can do about each one.

1. Fear of Failure

Fear of failure is arguably the most powerful barrier to personal growth. When we are afraid of getting things wrong, we stop taking risks — and without risk, there is no real growth. This fear manifests as hesitation, self-doubt, and a tendency to stick to what is comfortable and familiar, even when we know we are capable of more.

The antidote is a growth mindset — the understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, but a part of it. Every misstep carries a lesson. When we start viewing setbacks as feedback rather than defeat, we free ourselves to try, to experiment, and ultimately to grow.

2. Lack of Clear Goals

Without a destination, every road looks the same. A lack of clear, defined goals is one of the most common reasons people feel stuck in their personal development. You may have a vague sense of wanting to "be better" or "do more," but without specifics, that desire rarely translates into action.

Setting SMART goals — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound — provides the structure and direction your efforts need. A well-defined goal doesn't just tell you where you're going; it gives you a way to know when you've arrived, and milestones to celebrate along the way.

3. Procrastination and Waiting for the "Perfect" Time

Procrastination is a thief of potential. Whether it shows up as endless scrolling, perpetual "planning," or waiting for the stars to align before you begin, the result is the same: time passes and progress does not. Many people delay action because they are waiting for ideal conditions — but the perfect moment rarely comes.

The key to overcoming procrastination is to start small. Break large goals into manageable steps. Set deadlines — even self-imposed ones carry power. Identify what personally motivates you and keep it front of mind. Progress, however small, builds momentum, and momentum makes the next step easier.

4. Negative Self-Talk

The most constant voice in your life is your own. When that voice is relentlessly critical — whispering that you are not smart enough, not talented enough, not ready — it erodes confidence and self-esteem from the inside out. Negative self-talk often goes unnoticed precisely because it feels so natural, so "true."

The first step is awareness. Begin to notice when your inner dialogue turns harsh or defeatist, and consciously challenge those thoughts. Replace them with positive affirmations and constructive self-dialogue. See yourself with grace — as someone worthy of growth, capable of change, and deserving of encouragement. The way you speak to yourself shapes the life you build.

5. Lack of Support

No one grows in isolation. A strong support system — made up of family, friends, mentors, faith communities, or colleagues — provides the encouragement and accountability that keeps us moving forward, especially when the journey gets difficult. Without these connections, motivation can falter and self-doubt can take hold.

Seek out people who believe in your potential and are genuinely invested in your success. Find a mentor who has walked a path similar to the one you wish to take. Build relationships with others who are also committed to growth. Their feedback, perspective, and encouragement can be the difference between giving up and pressing on.

Final Thoughts

Identifying these five hindrances is not a cause for discouragement — it is an invitation to grow. Every person on a path of self-improvement will encounter fear, doubt, distraction, and setbacks. The difference between those who grow and those who stagnate is not talent or circumstance; it is the willingness to confront these obstacles honestly and keep moving forward. Personal development is a journey, not a destination. And every step you take — no matter how small — counts.

The Most Important Person You’ll Talk to Today is Yourself

The Most Important Person You’ll Talk to Today is Yourself

How many times in the last 24 hours have you called yourself an idiot? How many times have you told yourself you’re a moron, or looked down on yourself and wondered why you even bother trying?

We often don’t realize it, but the way we talk to ourselves has a much bigger impact than the way others talk to us. When we use negative words like "worthless," "no good," or "idiot," we’re slowly destroying our sense of who we are.

Why is it So Easy to Be Our Own Worst Enemy?

Think about a game of bowling. It seems like one of the easiest sports—you just roll a ball down a lane and try to knock over ten pins that are already designed to fall over. But when you miss those pins, or hit the open section where there aren't any pins at all, it’s easy to get frustrated. Instead of recognizing that bowling is actually quite difficult, even for professionals, we turn that frustration inward and start calling ourselves names.

We do this in life, too. We take on difficult tasks and, when we struggle, we assume it’s because we’re "stupid" or "pathetic" rather than acknowledging that what we’re doing is simply hard.

You Have a Purpose and Value

It's important to remember that you are not the names you call yourself. You have a purpose, and what you’re working on might just require more time, effort, and thought than you initially realized. Struggling doesn't mean you're a moron; it just means you might need to work a little harder at something that’s genuinely challenging.

Choosing a Better Way to Talk to Yourself

If we constantly tear ourselves down with our words, that’s who we’ll become. We’re only as good as our words say we are.

I believe we were all created with purpose and meaning, and that we are seen in a loving and encouraging way. If we can learn to listen to those more positive perspectives, we can begin to see ourselves differently, too.

Start Speaking Life Over Yourself

Today, I want to encourage you to speak positive, good things over yourself. Stop the negative self-talk and the name-calling. You’re not an idiot; you’re someone with value who might just be facing a tough challenge.

I’d love to hear from you. Have you ever struggled with negative self-talk? How have you learned to forgive yourself and move past it to become the person you’re meant to be? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and don’t forget to like and subscribe for more encouragement!

Why Boundaries Are the Secret to Success

Why Boundaries Are the Secret to Success

Hello and welcome to another beautiful day on the blog! I’m writing to you from sunny Florida, enjoying the weather and thinking about something that’s been on my mind lately: Success.

We all have goals. We all have plans for the future. But I’ve realized that no matter how good your plan is or what tools you have, you will not be successful if you don’t set boundaries.

I know "boundaries" isn't everyone's favorite word. It sounds restrictive. But really, it’s just another word for discipline. It’s about doing what is necessary to get where you want to go.

The Basketball Analogy

Think about a basketball game. What if there were no boundaries? You could take the ball, run out of the gym, down the street, and around the corner. If the opposing team scores, you could just leave the court because you're losing.

Without lines on the court, there is no game. There is no focus. The same applies to our lives. Without boundaries, nothing keeps us focused on our goals.

I’ll be honest with you—I struggle with this. I love football. I could easily spend my entire weekend watching games from noon on Saturday until late Sunday night. But if I do that, I’m exhausted by Monday morning. My lack of boundaries affects my entire week.

So, how do we fix this? Here are three things I’ve put in place to help me stay on track:

1. Find Your "Coach"

You need someone in your corner who wants you to succeed just as much as you do. For me, that’s my wife. She knows exactly what to say to keep me focused—not by nagging, but by reminding me of where I want to go.

If you don’t have a spouse who can do that, get a friend or hire a business or life coach. You need an objective voice to look at your life and help you set those necessary boundaries.

2. Set Achievable, Smaller Goals

I am a big dreamer. I love setting massive goals that take six months or a year to achieve. The problem? When a goal is that far away, it’s easy to lose focus after a few months. The excitement fades.

The solution is to break those big dreams down. Set smaller goals that you can check off every week or month. Those small wins give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you disciplined enough to reach the big finish line.

3. Just Do It

It sounds simple, and it sounds like a shoe commercial, but it’s the truth. Sometimes, you just have to put in the work. You have to get up when the alarm goes off instead of hitting snooze for the fifth time. You have to choose to do it today instead of pushing it to tomorrow.

Often, the only thing standing between us and our goals is the simple act of doing the work.

I hope this encourages you to look at your own routine. What boundaries are you putting in place? What keeps you disciplined? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear how you are planning for success this year!
